Norfolk fish and chips

Eating out… with additional requirements!

What’s one of the most enjoyable things about being on holiday? For many of us, it will be the chance to eat out to try a variety of local cuisines (and to have a break from the usual food prep and washing-up after…)

Some of my favourite holiday memories have been the tastes and smells of tantalising treats – from eating crusty baguettes and oozing ripe cheese in France, enjoying a sizzling platter of garlic prawns in Gran Canaria, trying egg hoppers for breakfast in Sri Lanka, and nothing beats the comfort of tucking into a delicious fish pie while sitting by a blazing fire in a Norfolk pub. Or, of course, wolfing down fish and chips on the beach.

This feels like a very personal blog to me. As the individual who manages Scalp Cottage bookings, so that guests as well as family members can enjoy staying here, I know I’m in a very trusted position. I want to make sure everyone has a wonderful time while they’re on holiday. Scalp Cottage was originally owned by my grandparents – so four generations of family members have now enjoyed Holme-next-the-Sea as their favourite holiday spot.

I wanted to write some recommendations for places to eat out in the local area, with some special provisos in place… This blog is written as the mum of a coeliac child, whose dietary needs can make it hard to be spontaneous when planning holiday meals out. Sometimes, when you’re away from home, it can be hard to find places to eat if you have special dietary requirements.

In addition to a coeliac child, I also have a vegan husband and a fussy 7-year-old. All of this adds to the complications of finding suitable meals out and takeaways! In all our years coming to the Norfolk coast, these are the places we can recommend from our personal experiences:

  • Old Town Beach Cafe – Old Hunstanton
A fantastic choice of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free breakfast and lunch options in a cafe right on the edge of the beach. In addition, the relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for bringing dogs and children.
  • The Spontaneous Cuppa – Hunstanton
100% gluten-free café. Whether you have allergies, intolerances, or are someone who has made a lifestyle choice about what you eat, this cafe is very careful with contamination and all the dishes are dairy-free (and most soy-free as well).
  • Vegas Fish Bar – Hunstanton
With separate gluten-free fryers and equipment, it’s our regular ‘arrival night’ treat on our way to the cottage. After all, what’s the seaside without a fish and chips supper?
  • The Lodge – Old Hunstanton
Offering an array of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian meals, this one’s a great choice for a Sunday lunch or more formal sit-down meal.
  • The Northgate Indian – Hunstanton
This takeaway very clearly labels its gluten-free options and marks allergens and intolerances, which feels quite rare for a takeaway restaurant.
  • Thornham Deli – Thornham
Offering an extensive menu with separate gluten-free and vegan menus, this deli caters for all dietary needs. It’s a great spot for breakfast and brunch, but it can get busy on holidays and weekends!
